How long does a cat sleep?

Cats are excellent sleepers. On average, an adult cat sleeps between 12 and 16 hours a day, while a kitten or senior cat can sleep up to 20 hours. This duration varies depending on the animal's age, activity, and environment.
1. Why do cats sleep so much?
Cat sleep is an adaptation inherited from their wild ancestors. As predators, they had to conserve their energy for hunting, even though our domestic cats no longer need to stalk their food.
2. The different phases of sleep
The cat's sleep alternates between:
- Light sleep (or drowsiness): This represents approximately 75% of rest time. The cat remains alert and can react quickly in case of danger.
- Deep sleep: This lasts about 25% of sleep time and allows for physical and mental recovery. It is during this phase that the cat can dream, as sometimes evidenced by its paw or whisker movements.
3. Factors influencing sleep duration
- Age: Kittens and older cats sleep more than healthy adults.
- Activity: A cat that plays or goes outside sleeps less than a sedentary indoor cat.
- Season: Cats sleep more in winter, when the days are shorter.
- Boredom: A lack of stimulation can cause a cat to sleep more to compensate for the lack of activity.
4. When to worry?
A sudden change in sleeping habits may indicate a health problem. A cat that sleeps excessively, seems lethargic, or, conversely, sleeps less than usual, could be suffering from a medical condition or stress. In this case, a visit to the veterinarian is recommended.
Quality sleep is essential to your cat's well-being. Providing a calm and comfortable environment, with a bed or a secure place where they can rest, contributes to their balance and health.
